Argh! References!

Hi All, I’ll probably add a couple of posts about this job offer as I’m in turmoil!

However, my first issue is references! I’ve been offered a great job (albeit a step up which is adding an element of terror). The company have asked for references (plural). My company only issue the standard employment dates and title reference. The company want an in depth reference and preferably want to speak to someone about me.

They said it can be from a previous employer but they also only issue standard references.

Can I ask a colleague?? I have a project manager (same seniority as me but managed most of my projects so I took direction from her) I could maybe ask. I also have another colleague who was one of my key stakeholders. I feel awkward asking colleagues, especially as they want the references before they formally make the offer to me .

Does your company have a policy that bans colleagues from giving references?

is it a role that follows Safer Recruitment rules?

I’m not sheet they do but there’s a culture of treating people who leave as somehow betraying the company. I’m worried my colleagues will be worried they’ll be found out and it will put them in a difficult position.

No, nothing to do with children etc.

Then new company can ask but current company doesn’t have to give.

I’ve done this for people needing references before. The organisation I worked with didn’t mind as long as it was done privately, they just didn’t want it done in the org’s name. I think that’s pretty common.
