I'm thinking about the future and a potential move into data protection in the next few years. Currently a librarian with a background in data management advising research groups about gdpr and data issues, currently working in a more collections focused role. I've done some mandatory training recently and loved it, made me realise how interested I am in data management and data protection issues. My question is: does anyone know of the best most well recognised courses to do? I'm getting mightily confused online! I think I have a few years to think about it all but would like to start planning.

Hi there, you might find it useful to do a course on the GDPR on Futurelearn (I think there are two on there).

And then, get yourself certified by IAPP. There are courses on data and on AI and they would help you illustrate that you have the knowledge.

Rather than jumping into training courses, have you considered what opportunities to develop skills in data exist in your current job? If you are in a local authority or school, can you offer to take on FOI / SAR work in your team / department for example, or get involved in SharePoint development work if that is ongoing.

I recruit into data protection roles in the public sector, and those applicants with work experience in our field almost also shine above those with little or no experience but a DP certification qualification.
