Seeking advice on leaving secondment early.

Hello, hoping to find some general advice here.

I took a step up into management via a 12 month secondment at my current employer. After 6 months and facing persistent challenges with the working dynamic of the new team/my management, I find myself unhappy, stressed and regretting the move.

I have raised my concerns on multiple occasions and have attempted to discuss the option of ending my secondment early. I was told that this wouldn't be possible as they had back-filled my role for the 12 months that I would be out of my original post. As a result, I have recently made the decision to seek alternative employment and if I can find something, terminate the contracts of both my secondment and original role.

I now have an interview scheduled for another role (completely unrelated to current role, different department entirely) within the same company. I am wondering if, should I be successful, would there be any implications? For example, can a company "ban" you from working there, even if in a completely different role, should you not fulfill the full duration of a secondment?

Just wondering if anyone has found themselves in a similar situation and how you approached it.

Thank you!

A secondment works both ways, for both parties to see if it’s a good fit, so you can step down. The company should have a policy on this.

They can’t ban you from the new role, but they can insist you work your notice period in your current role before they release you.
