How do families afford to relocate to Devon?

Desperate to move back to Devon (Exeter area) to be nearer family but there aren't jobs that pay enough to reflect the cost of houses!

I naively assumed that as there are fewer "big jobs" in Devon that house prices would be alot lower, but it just doesn't seem to be the case!

I think you can only live there if you're medical/solicitors/teacher etc where you can work anywhere!

The career I'm in would mean I'd have to take a 40% pay cut but a similar house is basically the same price 😭

What's going on!

You need to go back in time and move before COVID I'm afraid!

Does it have to be Exeter? You don't have to go far into Mid Devon/Somerset before the prices start falling a bit. You'll really struggle to find a nice little cottage with a few acres for much less than £1M these days, though, if that's what you're after.

That’s a huge budget! You can easily get a 3/4 bed detached with lovely views in a really nice village within half an hour of exeter.
i think i may live very near some posters on here…

It sounds like you're just wanting houses that are too expensive for your budget. I'm not in Devon, but I also live in an popular area for 2nd homes/Londoners relocating for rural views and it always amuses me when people are surprised that their money doesn't buy a mansion here...

And also when they're surprised that local wages don't match the prices. Of course they don't! That's why we don't like second homes.

Torquay is actually lovely, despite the slating it gets on this site.
You can get a good property here for 700

I feel Torquay is very run down compared with Exeter but ok better than Paignton.
