Get out of retail

Help! I’ve worked in retail my entire working life. I started as a Saturday girl aged 16 and am now 33 and still in retail. I did work my way up to an assistant manager but after deciding to move areas I decided to go part time for a better work/life balance. I currently work around 14 hours a week. I wouldn’t mind working more but wouldn’t want to go back to full time with little one at home now and like caring for him. But I just have to get out of retail I can’t handle it any more. I didn’t go to university but I do have decent gcse and A levels and have recently done a level 2 course in digital marketing. I have many skills and learn quickly but just do not know what to look for or where to look for a new role. Has anyone else successfully got out of retail and found something they could apply the same skillset to?! I don’t even know where to begin? Debating going to an agency to help me otherwise! Thanks!

What,
specifically, is driving you out?
I would suggest seeking library work, but if you’re tired of working in a public facing role, this won’t be a useful suggestion.
I’ve noticed that people are easier to deal with (for me. But there are other challenges) in library work, as they’re not spending any money, so they don’t have that weird buyers’ attitude of stress/ entitlement/ demands.

What about the civil service?

UltramarineViolet · 05/04/2024 08:26

Customer service role might suit you if you are good working with the public

Scarletttulips · 05/04/2024 08:28

Why not visit an agency?

They can match your skills to jobs.

The pubic are worse now than ever and DD hates her part time role in a major store.

Update: It’s working in the public facing role doing far too much for literally minimum wage that makes me want to leave!

Could you look for an apprenticeship in marketing or advertising?
What about something in social media?

I left retail too

Public were just too much!

Cherrysherbet · 05/04/2024 17:45

I like working in retail, but can understand why you want out.
Some members of the public treat us like something they’ve stepped in. No one should have to put up with that.

I hope you find something you enjoy.

I left retail for the civil service. Pay wasn't much better but the work was easier and hours were flexible.
