I applied for an expression of interest job and did not get it ( civil service ).They said I met the required standard but didn’t get the job. It went to someone in my team who was there a few months . I feel so deflated . I’ve worked so hard , covered the role etc . I’ve been in the company for nearly 4 years . I feel like such a fool ! How can I get over my embarrassment . I have no hard feelings towards the person. Any tips of managing this . My current job is so awful as well.

Argh. It feels crushing now, but it won’t hurt or matter a few months down the line. I’m a bit of a serial job applicant every few years when I decide I need tu move on. You prepare so much for each job, you ‘live’ it. It’s disappointing but it’ll pass. Have you learnt anything from the process?

I know that feeling and it is sore. As ladywithlapdog says, the feeling passes in time. Don’t let it put you off looking and applying for something else. Can you meet with your LM and respond positively saying something like ‘ though disappointing not to get it, you welcomed the experience and hope that this demonstrates your keenness to progress/gain other experience.’ Maybe asking them to support/sponsor you to help you to do this?

I think you know you have been a fool like I was

You might be treated great and genuinely loved but what matters is your personal happiness and /or pay and are they willing to go the extra mile for you. You have proven yourself over 4 years now their chance
Your loyalty is stability for them and a sign you are just dependable. The new people are rising stars
Funny slightly unwoke story
I am an ethnic minority UK born. I'm typical English run down , stale and boring
A guy from my country started up, young, fresh, corporate dream
I used to joke to the white working class guy in my team that I was just not exotic enough.

Point being my face stopped fitting after 5 years or rather it was suitable for behind closed doors
The new guy was the right face and I was an embarrassment. I also was a bit scruffy for this office job tbf although I outperformed everyone on my level
Maybe you need to apply elsewhere and dip your toes. You don't seem happy ?
