Holiday entitlement

How is holiday entitlement calculated in hours for someone starting part way through the holiday year if they do different hours each day? For example someone working 3 days a week 22.5 hours in total, but the working hours per day are not the same each day. I took the full entitlement for the year in hours divided by 52 multiplied by 37 weeks left in the year. When I compared my calculation against an online calculator it came up with a slightly different answer. I am guessing it must be to do with averaging the 22.5 hours over 3 days.

My workplace has deducted annual leave as hours rather than days, for me it was 7.4 hours for a full day off.

If your contract stipulates that you work 10 hours on Monday, 6 hours on Tuesday and 6.5 on Wednesday, with a fixed pattern then I’d expect it to deduct accordingly.

Do you have a fixed working pattern?

It depends on exactly how many hours are considered "full time" by your employer- you'll get different results depending if its 35hrs, 37.5hrs or 40hrs. It also depends how Bank Holidays are accounted for - do they come out of this allowance? The number of bank holidays left in the year at the time you started might affect the calculation.

Worked out in equivalent hours and deducted on same basis.

The holiday entitlement will be in hours and holiday taken in hours. I’m just a bit confused by the entitlement slightly varying when calculating the pro rata amount for starting part way through the leave year. For example based on Gov 28 days FT equivalent 126 hours is the annual entitlement (pro rata 22.5 hours over 3 days). I get the same figure. For the pro rata calc due them starting part way through the year it is 86.3 hours (start date 15th May). I don’t understand how they get to this figure. I make it 80 hours rounded up (based on 33 weeks). Perhaps I shouldn’t be basing it on weeks? What am I doing wrong? Something silly no doubt!

When does the holiday entitlement start from? Is it January 1st, or start of the tax year? Which I believe is the 5th of April 2024.

The hol year is from 1st Jan -31st December.

Are you remembering to add in the pro rata of bank holidays? You’ll need to book those from holiday entitlement but are usually included in the hours

Yes, I’m thinking it’s bank holidays that are skewing the figures. Part time working and bank holiday allowance has always confused me no end to be honest!

Is the full time 20 days annual leave, plus 8 days bank holiday?

At my last job every employee got 6 weeks annual leave of their weekly hours . So full time got , say 6 weeks of 40 hours, a 4 hour weekend staff 6 weeks of 4 hours.
A weeks leave was accrued after every 2 months of service.
