Have I blown it?

Found a job offer I am really interested in. I have all the qualifications and experiences they are looking for. I updated my CV with the relevant key word, spent time writing a letter of motivation, got DH to check it then sent it off yesterday.

I had a doubt today that I had spelt the company name wrong so I looked at the letter, I hadn't changed the name of the company from the last letter I wrote! I changed the address and the text in the letter but forgot to change the name at the top.

Have I totally blown it? Will they just throw out the application cause I'm an idiot?

Ugh! Could you email them asap and ask them to delete your email and that you will be resubmitting?

Unfortunately you might have. I would can any application with details incorrect as I would view it as a lack of attention to detail.

Conversely, I have done it myself, so don't be too hard on yourself. I didn't get anywhere with the job I did it for either.

@HappiestSleeping I thought as much. I'm guessing contacting them would be counter productive.

I would contact them. Nothing to lose now.
Employers know you apply to other places but lack of attention to detail not good.

If nothing else, contacting them will show that you own your mistakes and correct them promptly.

If you don’t I think they will definitely bin it.

🤞

I'd agree with the others. You have nothing to lose, so you might as well.

Is it still open or was yesterday the deadline? If it's still open, could recall the email and resend it, and hope that they didn't open it because they're waiting to review all of the applications together after the deadline?

I sent it via a platform and can't find a way to recall it. Their website has a contact form rather than an email address.

As it happens DD1 practically drives past on her way to work so is going to hand deliver a paper copy of my CV and (updated) letter. I'm hoping that by having a hard copy they may not bother reading the online one. I know it's unlikely but worth a try.

I will take extra care and check everything in triplicate in future.

Oh I feel for you OP I actually did this recently. Unfortunately they replied saying the submitted docs were already being reviewed and I wasn't successful. Hard copy might work,.can't hurt to try!

It's not uncommon - I reviewed 20 applications for a position recently and three had done it. But as the job required attention to detail, it definitely counted against them. The rest of their CV would have to blow me away for them to progress (and in all three cases, that didn't happen)

I just had a call and I have a zoom interview tomorrow! She only mentioned the CV that was dropped off in person so maybe they haven't seen the letter with the mistake.

It is the best prospect I have had in 6 months of looking!

Oh wow! Well at least, after your initial mistake, you showed initiative and presence of mind - great attributes in an employee!! 😆 I wouldn't have thought of the paper CV route.

Best of luck for your interview 🍀

If I did see your incorrect letter now, the effort to correct the mistake would reflect well on your for me personally.

Good luck!

Just to update, I have had a call from them and they want to see me next week for another interview, this time in person.

Clearly dropping the CV off in person was worth it, I might do it in future even if I don't make a stupid mistake on my letter!

Good luck! That is fantastic! I did similar once and they called me and asked if I knew where the job was, I was really embarrassed and admitted I had copied and pasted from another application and they said it is normal, lots of people copy and paste and they still wanted to meet me for an interview. I didn’t get the job anyway. Best of luck next week, let us know!
