Returning to work - help!

Is there anyone here who is currently trying to return to work after having children?
I left my (successful) job in recruitment 4.5 years ago and have had 2 children since. Prior to kids I've never not worked and have held various jobs in recruitment, retail, customer service and as cabin crew.

A year ago I completed a short course and started my own business, which I thought would show that I have kept busy and used my initiative. Anyhow, all the money I've made from my business has been reinvested, so on paper, I'm not in profit.

I really need to be earning the equivalent of 16 hours in order to claim some free nursery hours.

I've been applying for various jobs in retail, night shifts in hotels and sent my CV off to temp agencies. I've literally not had one single call back. I've always walked straight into work so can't believe I can't even secure an interview in a minimum wage job.

Is anyone else in the same boat? Are there any recruiters on here who could offer any insight. Are retail jobs inundated with applications?

I used to write CVs for candidates so I'm pretty sure my CV and applications look OK.

Help!
