Has anyone got experience of attending a work conference in Saudi Arabia? If so, what did you wear, did you always make sure you were with a male colleague? Do you have any advice?

I have worked in Saudi Arabia from time to time, and travelled there. Conferences are usually held in "enclaves" or areas that are (or appear to be) more liberal. Appropriate work wear is suitable. I'd suggest trousers and long / longish blouse or tunic top. I wouldn't worry about being with a male colleague - it's pretty safe and little hassle. But if you are with a male in public do be aware of perceptions. Men and women don't generally touch each other / flirt or appear to be flirting.

If you are able to for work (depends on whether you have a dress code or not) then smart salwar kameez (easy to buy and cheap in the UK) is suitable, cool if outside / not in a/c areas, and very versatile in terms of being able to dress up or down.

I used to live there.
No, you don't need to be accompanied by a bloke at all times - you are totally free to go out and about. (Infact, the most uneasy I felt was going out to dinner with an old work colleague and not DH - ie just me and a bloke I wasn't married to)

Clothing. Definitely cover knees and elbows. Ideally cover ankles and wrists. Id strongly suggest the ankles and wrists route. Very, very little skin is on show - male or female. Don't wear anything too tight. I used to wear wide legged trousers and a tunic.

Any info on which city you are going to?

Thank you both for your help; exactly what I was looking for. I think it will be Riyadh. I will be avoiding intimate contact with my male colleague because he is just a colleague!
