Got shouted at work

I had a thread here when I got an interview for afternoon supervisor job at a secondary school. Got the job and I am very happy I did. My coworkers are nice people although some slight disagreements. The faculty are good and kind. Kids are kids , usual teenage packages 😉

However, I was given a hint that kitchen ladies are usually grumpy. They hinted that they have been reported a few times over the years for being mean. I do understand that they work in the kitchen and have to prepare LOADS of food and keep it ready so the stress creeps in.

However, it was my first rota on my own ( my collegues helped me until now) and one kitchen staff shouted on top of her lungs to me in front of other kitchen staff and loads of kids 'STOP,STOP!You are letting in too many.. look at this!'. I apparently over crowded the Q by letting in too many kids. Anyhow, that actually did not make me embarrased or sad, I just said 'ok, will control the q' and carried on.

However one of my coworkers ( usually nice) whispers something into my other coworker in front of me just when the rota ended and giggles. Not sure if it was the shouting news or something else amusing. Then the same one lets the third coworker know that I got shouted at( the third coworker told me). Honestly, I would openly accept and tell about it in a conversation, I am not ashamed or embarrased. But she could not hold it and told them without delay the next instant, even before I had a chance to get into a conversation with them after the shift.

I am now in doubt that it IS a big thing and that I should be offended but somehow I am not because may the Q might have been a problem for that lady and that someone else's unprofessional shouting is not my issue.

What would you do about the Kitchen lady and the coworker who reports your stuff pronto to others on your back?

You are totally overthinking it.

What would I do about the others? Um, nothing.

You were screwing up - every dining room full of teenagers I've been in is noisy, she will have shouted to make sure you heard before you made more of a mess.

You have NO idea what was whispered, so that's moot.

You knew people talk about the kitchen ladies behaviour because they told YOU yet you're now surprised them shouting at you got mentioned?

Seriously though, it's a queue - managing it is not hard. The only thing you need to do following this "incident" is manage the queue properly. Focus on that, and not overthinking this.

This is totally typical of staff working in school kitchens.

My advice is to keep yourself to yourself as much as you can, and not get involved in any drama.

School canteens are noisy places, so she may well have shouted simply to make herself heard. They are also hot and pressurised.

I would do nothing, just quietly get on with it.

I would speak to her.
Ignore the whispering of others as you don't know what was said and its silliness.
But shouting at your colleagues is unprofessional. I would address that and move on.

And start something? Not recommended. Not worth it, unless she is shouting for no reason, or shouting regularly.

Volatile places - and the OP is only in the door.

I think it's just par for the course. I got the same treatment when I worked in retail and other jobs prior to leaving uni..
