Fixed term contract / SMP query

Hi,

I’m 12 months into a fixed term contract, with it due to expire in June. I work part-time and take home just under £1000 a month. I was informed last year my employer plans to extend my contract and told me not to look for another job, although they didn’t indicate how long the extension would be.

I’ve found out I’m approximately 7 weeks pregnant. I looked at my employers guidance on SMP and they state if you earn under the National Insurance Contribution threshold you are not entitled to it, and should apply for MA. However, reading online, you are entitled to SMP if you earn at least £123 a week. Therefore I’m a bit confused?

Also if I qualified for SMP, would I be entitled to it if my employer decides not to extend my contract - the team leader sent an email stating they plan to extend it but I’ve not had anything from HR yet.

I don’t want to inform my employer if my pregnancy yet until I understand the above.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
