Work three days a week and calling in sick

Hello,

i know this is a stupid question but do you think it’s horrible to call in sick when you work from home three days a week? I’m sick like a dog, body aches everywhere and fever of 39 but I can’t help but feel extreme guilt because I’m only part time. I have a little one (15 months) and she’s ill too and the nursery had an outbreak. Will I get fired for calling in sick? I am very anxious person

Don't be daft, you won't get fired for calling in sick.

If you're too sick to work, call in sick.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 16/01/2024 20:16

Unless you're very unreliable, I can't imagine you'd be fired for being off sick. It doesn't matter how many days you work or where you work from. Even when you're at home, some days you're just too ill too work at all.

How long have you worked there and how much sick leave have you had previously?

VisionsOfSplendour · 16/01/2024 20:20

Has this happened to you in the past? It's very unusual to think you'd be fired for being sick, you must know that , what's the back story

Mum8929 · 16/01/2024 20:20

Been there almost two years. It just came back from maternity three months ago

No I’m just a very anxious person and overthink everything. I feel stressed because I just came back from maternity leave and work part time so I worry colleagues will be annoyed

Of course not. If you are sick, you’re sick. Your daughter being sick mustn’t come into it, though.

That might be annoyed but why would that mean youd be sacked? Employment rights don't depend on the mood of your colleagues

Justanything86 · 16/01/2024 20:27

Your collegues will be more annoyed if they catch what you've got op.

I was off for about a week between both of my kids being ill within a couple of months of returning from maternity leave. No-one batted an eyelid, they're used to people calling in sick. Just part of running a business. Most usually have a sickness policy anyways, as long as that's followed you'll be fine

She works from home, though.

I totally understand your feelings of paranoia as I also work part time (3 days) since I returned from mat leave last June. I love working PT but you deffo feel more guilt around days off as a few days can equate to many days when you're PT. Can you be flexible with your days? Also if you're sick you're sick. No one is thinking about you as much as you're thinking about you. I have to remind myself of this all the time! Get yourself better!

Jules912 · 16/01/2024 20:55

I also work part time from home and this never even occurred to me. I do find it's easier to work from home while sick than when I had to go in, but sometimes I'm too sick even for that and it's never been a problem.

KatyPerryMenopause · 16/01/2024 20:59

I understand you OP, to the degree that I have made up my days on a non-working day when sick on a working day. I don't have to do that obviously but then can point to having 100% attendance.

bctf123 · 16/01/2024 21:23

Depends on your work culture
People who work in food get told to still come in as agency don't give a fig about germs
I called in sick 3 times ina year on my weekend job which was ridiculous to discipline me. What can you do

NancyJoan · 16/01/2024 21:26

Almost everyone I speak to at the moment either is ill, or has just recovered from something grim. Phone in, rest up, log back in when you are better.

Guavafish1 · 16/01/2024 21:28

go to work if you can
