Moving back to UK and applying for work

I am living abroad and hoping to move back to the UK in the next year or so. Ideally I would like to have a job lined up for when I return. Does anyone have any experience of pulling this off? Is it acceptable to ask to conduct a job interview online, for example? I work in compliance in the university sector but would also be interested in the civil service, local government etc. I have a UK address I can use but am not living there ATM. Anyway just looking to see if anyone else made it work!

We interviewed someone in your position recently and were happy to accommodate an online interview at his request, even though the rest of the interviews were face to face.
