When do new employers ask for bank details

I recently completed my vetting process for a software engineer role at my local police station and now am waiting a start date which I'm told will be given this week. I haven't been asked to sign any documents or for my bank details either, is this normally done on the first day of employment? I would have thought they'd sort it out before the start date

Normally once you’ve started it was one of the first things I was given to do when I started a new job recently.

Depends - they only need your bank details when they pay you so could be after you start
