Commercial Building Surveying

Hi folks,

So I’m seriously considering a career change into commercial building surveying. I’ve been weighing this up for a while.

I guess the big obstacle is there would initially be a significant pay drop whilst I train and become fully chartered.

I wondered if there were any Mumsnetters currently working as commercial building surveyors? Or perhaps partners or family members?

Is it an enjoyable/rewarding/stimulating career? I know it’s uncouth to ask but what sort of salaries are being commanded once chartered? I know the process of becoming chartered can take 5 years + so I want to get an idea as to whether the initial work and financial sacrifice will be worth it in the long term.

Many thanks!

I work alongside a team Of commercial building surveyors

I think the thing that strikes me is there are always many many jobs advertised for chartered building surveyors so you will always have opportunities both private and public sector.

I think graduate building surveyor salaries start at 24- 26k ish for a big firm. Rising to possibly 45/50k for junior associate levels which you would aim to achieve 5/6 years after qualification.
