How to go for interview when working full time?

The three times offered were 9:30, 10:30 and 11am. My first thought was to do it over lunch break but 11 is the latest.
I start work at half past 8.
Its also an in person, so no chance of a phone call or zoom.
Not sure what to do, really don’t want to phone in sick. My workplace is fairly relaxed - should I just say I have an appointment but not specify the appointment? Hate these situations!!

I usually just say I'm going to the dentist/doctor for something routine. No one's ever questioned me about it.

This is what I think I will do. The problem is I over think, and go “what if someone sees me at the interview location” or “what if I do get the job and they know I lied about dentist/doctors”
I really don’t think anyone would care, especially as I could claim I did it over lunch break through zoom.

Is there any reason why you can't just tell them you're going for an interview?

ILoveCrimbo · 06/12/2023 15:35

Why not just ask to take half a day annual leave. You could be requesting it off for any reason.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 06/12/2023 15:36

Can you not book annual leave?

WhatNoRaisins · 06/12/2023 15:37

Most people do the appointment lie here in my experience.

Yep. This is what I do

I used my "Christmas shopping" morning/ afternoon to attend an interview a couple of years ago, otherwise I would have made up an appointment, phoned in sick, booked a days holiday (if I had any left). I wouldn't tell my current employer that I had an interview.

CornishPorsche · 06/12/2023 15:43

I book AL or use TOIL.

Temporaryname158 · 06/12/2023 15:44

Book leave or state you have an appointment, it’s really not that complicated and you seem to be making more of this than it is. People do this all the time

On what planet would anyone do this?

WhatNoRaisins · 06/12/2023 15:54

I suppose if I was in a position where there was a chance my employer might offer me more money to stay I'd consider being honest. That's obviously not most people's situation.

Cheeesus · 06/12/2023 15:56

Can you say you have an appt but will work a bit longer to make up the hours?

On a planet where employers are reasonable and don't hold it against you if you want to explore other opportunities?

I wouldn't recommend this to the OP as I don't know what her workplace is like, but I've had plenty of employees tell me over the years that they have interviews. I don't hold it against them... they are not bonded to us for life! If they are successful, it's helpful to have an early heads up that they might leave. If they're unsuccessful, it's helpful to be able to have conversations about why they might have been thinking of moving on, whether there are issues that need to be resolved, whether there are areas of experience that they might be keen to develop etc. It's all part of an open dialogue between line managers and staff imo, and most of my team know that they can tell me this stuff without it counting against them in any way.
