Feeling really out of place

I’m 27 but regularly get mistaken for being younger. I’m also short.

I have started a new job and no one has really taken to me. I get lots of comments on my age, what my career background is, and get mistaken for being more junior than I am. It doesn’t help that I’m in a mid level role, but am the youngest person on my team.

It’s odd because I never had this problem in my previous jobs even though I was younger - but I feel like there’s a spotlight on what I look like in my current job. I get embarrassed putting my camera on or meeting people in real life as people tend to act differently with me once they see me.

any advice on stepping up my presence?

also I do tend to dress really smartly at work, but that doesn’t help much because it’s a casual dress code! So I might be the only one in a blouse and trousers.

This is so difficult, because it is good to be yourself but also good to try to fit in with the general culture to some extent!

I would work on general confidence. You were given the job, you have done well to get to your role earlier than many people do. Remember ageist remarks are unacceptable in the workplace so you can push back about your age. Are you in a sector where people are generally professional in their behaviour? I'm surprised you're getting so many remarks.
