Post maternity leave pension pay in

I'm due to return to work shortly following maternity leave and have been sent a figure by the finance team as to what I need to pay in to make up for the pension payments I didn't make while I was on maternity leave.

Even accounting for my employer paying 2/3rds of the cost, the remainder for me to pay is more than twice what I would have paid in pension contributions if I had been at work.

Is this standard?

All I'm getting from work is "pension service calculated the figure we don't know how".

The missed pension payments would have added growth to your plan, so the impact of not paying for a year costs more than just the lost contributions.

If the calculated payments are to make up for missing them then they might include a top up for the missed growth to bring your plan to where it would have been if you'd continued paying.

Ok that makes sense. Thank you @user628468523532453
