Was made head of department after a few lay offs. No pay rise or promo. Work said they’d look at it in new year but have gone back on that now. Said I’ll just be part of usual cycle despite the extra responsibilities. I have to deal with some difficult staff and if I’m honest I’m really not enjoying working there. The only good thing is the pension and the main reason I stay as I’d like to take early retirement if I can though that is still a
few years away!! I’m keeping half an eye out for other jobs but are all office based hundreds of miles away and I don’t want to move house due to family commitments and aging parents. It’s end of year and now I’m seeing a few comments from my boss questioning me about my performance so wondering what I’m going to be measured against. I’m concerned I’ll be subject to lay off too if business doesn’t pick up! Not seen many equivalent job options! I’m disappointed they’ve gone back on what they’ve said as we’re all finding it tough re cost of living but on the other hand keep telling myself be glad you’ve got a job for now!

Are you performing to your new job description?

I would ask for a meeting with your boss to go through everything. You should be receiving support following a promotion.

Your employer sounds awful!

would look carefully at the pension position you’re in as of today: unless you’re in your 60s with many years service it’s unlikely early retirement is affordable.

Then would look at other job options within reasonable commute.

Would ask for your job description and objectives

There was no promotion to be clear! No new job description or anything!

Ah! So - you are doing a job where you have no idea of the main responsibilities etc?

What would have happened if you turned down this "opportunity"? It sounds as though you are being set up to fail.
