Any marking directors, head of marking people?

Hello, I'm planing on changing career and wondered if anyone has some insight.

I'm currently the MD of a creative agency working closely on global brand campaigns and product launches from a creative background but now finding myself linked and supporting the marking teams and enjoying that side way more than the creative side.

It offers more travel, variety and pays higher over the next 20+ years of my career I feel marking has more stability than creative agency side as well.

I'm looking to transition across to client side and getting my ducks in a row so to speak but wondering what ducks a recruiting marketing head would look for in staff?

Do you think I should apply for marking manager roles and work upwards? Would a head of marketing employ someone from agency world?

Go straight in for marking head roles? For smaller businesses and work into larger corporates after getting results.

And would you advise on starting my CIM 5/6 prior to applying for roles?

Any insight or creative to agency side advice would be amazing .

If you're the MD of an agency I think you could go for a senior marketing manager roles at large companies or head of marketing at smaller companies. The only way to find out is to start applying for some roles.

Figure out if you want to do B2B or DTC, if you are more creative then you are likely to go towards DTC. You need to look through all of your previous work and figure out your strengths as they relate to marketing.

I don't look for CIM when hiring, I look for personality, their ability to talk about previous campaigns etc. with a focus on understanding the role of marketing in the revenue funnel.

Client side organisations can be very different culturally from agencies - more political and corporate. I'm from an agency background and have considered jumping the fence and that has usually been the main bone of contention on both sides - how I would deal with a very different culture. Worth considering how you might address that issue particularly as you are looking at senior leadership roles.

@getofftheplane thanks the agency I run is B2B and predominantly finance sector clients, insurance, investment and some healthcare and pharmaceutical so those would be my key client side sectors.

I'm having a day off today to make start on my CV so thank you for replying that really helps.

Have you ever worked client side? Or like me. Just thinking about it.

I'm ready to move I've been agency side for 20+ years London and Asia and it's not exciting me ior keeping me interested. I've hired some younger staff recently and their energy and enthusiasm for creative is lovely but makes me realise I'm a bit done with it.

I also think if I made the move and it was awful I could always switch back.

If you report your thread and ask MN to fix the title, you might get more traffic from marketing folk. They've probably been scrolling past because it sounds like a thread about exam marking.

I'm about to do that thank you!
