When to tell work

I’m only 5 weeks pregnant so wouldn’t normally be considering telling work yet. However, I’m struggling with nausea, fatigue and lack of motivation. I’m worried as I know my company is not very family friendly but I feel if I don’t tell them soon, they’re going to notice my performance and potentially my attendance slipping?

Is honesty the best policy or should I wait until I’m in my second trimester and hope I can survive that long? I already know they are likely to be far from supportive as I am their HR person and will be the first pregnancy in the company (we’re an SME start up)

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

I had HG with both my boys. With my first I was signed off for a month from 9 weeks; with my second I was signed off for 4 months from 6 weeks. With both I told my line manager immediately but asked that it did not go any further. I think it is good to tell someone so any adjustments can be made but anyone you tell should keep it in complete confidence.
Pregnancy Sickness does not count on your sickness record

I told my line manager early on, and it was actually a good thing work wise, as I then miscarried at 11 weeks and it made it much easier that she already knew. I asked her not to tell onwards though. as PP said, pregnancy related sickness (including miscarriage) cannot be counted on your sickness record, there are protections for it.
