Backpay in new job??? Help

Hi,
I’m quite confused. I’ve just started a new job and received my first pay, with a few hundred pounds of backpay, but I’m not too sure of why? I’ve worked exactly a month so I can’t seem to figure out why there would be backpay, if anyone has any insight on this please let me know!

Talk to the person who is responsible for payroll, if you can. And don't spend it!

Is it definitely backpay and not a tax refund?
If it's backpay, the only thing you can do is ask your payroll person/people, no one here is going to know.

Could it be something like you are paid 15th to 15th but started on the 1st so they've paid you 6 weeks ish?
