Just been signed off sick with stress and anxiety. I’ve woken up this morning feeling worse than ever and wondering if I’ve made a mistake and ploughing through would have made me feel better.

Absolutely not. You have done the right thing. You need to use this time to work on feeling better.

Are you having any counselling? Could you arrange some if not?
Some things that may help-

Go for a walk - ideally in a wooded area. Nature calms the nervous system .

Yoga- on you tube there's yoga with Adrienne she does some great yoga for anxiety sessions.

Meditation- the calm app has some lovely meditations and does a 5 day free trial .

A massage/reiki/acupuncture- alternative therapies are very calming if you can afford it.

Emotional freedom technique (tapping) is really good for calming nerves. You can Google how to do it.

A hot bath.

Watch a comedy film.

Practice breathing in for 4, hold for 7 out for 8. When we are anxious we tend to breath shallowly which lowers our oxygen levels and can cause nervous stomach, hear palpitations, headache.

I would try to get in to a routine each day and use this time to make yourself feel better.. Also make sure you eat regularly and drink plenty of water and go to bed at normal time/get up as normal.

Try to pay attention to your thoughts, when they are negative try to send them away without paying attention to them. Remember they are just thoughts they are not real. Anxious feelings will pass, you won't always feel like this. Try not feel overwhelmed by them and they will ease.

You've done the right thing, and clearly, your GP thinks so as well, otherwise they wouldn't have issued a fitnote.

Is it your job that is making you stressed? Maybe look for something else whilst you're off or think about how you can make it better, such as dropping a day. But take the time to re-set.

I think it entirely depends on your triggers and if you're able to access help while off that you couldn't have had while working.

When I had panic attacks based on agoraphobia being signed off would have been the worst thing for me, as it would have allowed me to stay home and made everything worse.

It’s perfectly normal, what you need is rest and recuperation and it will take longer than you think. As pp suggested start going for walks, meditation, mindfulness and self care.
