Following up job interview (dream job)

Guttedme · 12/10/2023 12:57

Hi,

Another ask if I may.

I've genuinely got another temp job to start next week but I haven't heard outcome from a dream job interview which is more permanent.

I want to chase outcome for dream job, I was loosely told they would be in touch some point mid-week (this week) of course I could take no contact as presumed unsuccessful but I really don't want a repeat of what happened earlier this week. (when I didn't hear on a certain declared day by a company I presumed I was unsuccessful) ((accept that means I was probably 2nd choice!))
I have not been marked as Employer not selected on Indeed yet either by dream job (which has been my experience sometimes following interviews).

It feels 'very force a hand' but I'm thinking my follow up should be along the lines of making it clear I've been offered other work as I can't be afraid if they want to call my bluff (this is what I've picked up when trying to find how best to deal with this) I've just never had to do this so any opinions gratefully received.
Another part of thinks chase soft, I'm going into a temp role that is shaky and not expected to last long so in the future if there was another occasion of the job being re-advertised I won't have blown my chance again possibly should I then be available again.

Help please.

I haven't seen any of your previous posts so not sure if there's some back story missing.

I appreciate waiting to hear isn't a pleasant experience, but they said midweek and I would still class it as being midweek. I wouldn't chase personally - it's pretty unlikely they've forgotten they need to let candidates know the outcome so not sure what you'd achieve by chasing. And I certainly wouldn't be making any veiled threats. Surely you just start your temp job and if you're offered dream job then your start date is agreed accordingly to allow for any notice period with the temp job, or am I missing something?

Thank you I totally see your point. I applied for dream job in May and didn't interview until last week so I get I've really probably overly hopeful and perhaps the job there doesn't exist or even better they decide in 6 weeks time! 🙂

I've a damaged CV and getting grief from employers about my short term jobs so I'm trying to keep job moves down and loyalty up.

Hate to start somewhere now and then be letting employers down.

I'm off to a bad start with next week's start as it is anyway - basically I was expressly told I would hear from temp job 2 last Friday, the call never came, I rendered myself unsuccessful and continued to this week's place of work, call came through Monday with a very unexpected start for literally next day (different to what I was told in interview) I could not bare to let the lady down whom I'm covering for this week.

I did have a thread in AIBU but took it down after I figured what to do Monday and had no responses so I do appreciate yours today. Thank you again.

After waiting for much of the day, I've now had the courtesy of being informed they want to wait until Monday to deliver outcome. With two positions being available you'd think they would be able to rule me out instantly if I am unsuccessful? I kind of don't get it. It also smacks a bit to know someone has been for an interview last day or so in then getting a quick answer.

I really don't know how to respond anymore. 😰

It's good that they are still thinking. Don't give up hope.

And don't worry about letting people down. Start the temp job and if you get the permanent one apologize to the temp one but you have to take the dream job. Good luck.

Vocaladvocaat · 13/10/2023 16:26

Good luck OP! Waiting is just the worst! I know that feeling of never being picked but your turn will come. I hope you get a good result!

Guttedme · 13/10/2023 16:54

Me too, thank you enormously, do think I'm playing with fire and it isn't of my own making for a change. ha ha!

I mustn't grumble, I've been chosen three times in the last few weeks whether by default just getting the wrong things come my way. Zero hours to temp work.

I'm on a disappointed card already with Monday's placement, no chance could I make the start date later as a result, so I guess least there is still some sort of window to escape maybe if needed !

I’m not sure what you are so worried about or think is unreasonable here? I agree if they’d flat ruled you out already they would probably have said. It sounds like they are genuinely still finishing off interviewing. Maybe an interview got delayed or had to be rescheduled . They are keeping you informed which is good! If it’s dream job just be patient and keep fingers crossed for Monday

Guttedme · 13/10/2023 21:48

Ok, thanks.

Honestly there could be a massive amount of reasons why the decision has been delayed. During hiring some of my reasons I have had for having to wait to offer a job/delay interviews have included:

Trying to negotiate more money for the candidate
One of the candidates had a bereavement
Covid
Couldn't get interview times in diaries to match up
HR being slow

Not knowing is awful but if they really thought you couldn't do it they would very probably just let you know.

Hi there,

Got an unsuccessful response about 3.30pm today. Possibly came a close 2nd as they said they are happy I can re-apply again in the future. I guess they must have spent pretty much most of the day debating.

I did think I was punching above my weight as there must have been around 75 applications per role.

What a shame.

If you were a close second you absolutely weren't punching above your weight. It means you have it spot on. You just have to keep trying.

Guttedme · 24/10/2023 10:34

You will never believe this as I really can't either. A U-turn has happened.

They must have someone withdraw or another person is leaving or something else entirely was going on, I got an are you still interested in the job message!! eeeekkk!

🙂

oh amazing, i was so disappointed for you, I remember not getting jobs I really wanted... and now you have it!!

SalmonnomlaS · 24/10/2023 11:50

Amazing news. Go for the role! As a manager I have had to do this once where I offered someone the role after giving feedback about being unsuccessful. They were fantastic in the role and I am sure you will be too. Sometimes it is very minor reasons why one gets it and not another. You were clearly appointable.

Congratulations! So pleased for you.
