Work after a big health scare...starting again.

I had a big health scare a few weeks ago (something life threatening but I don't want to go into too many details) and I am currently off sick for at least another week but feeling better and starting to look at future plans.

My workplace isn't that supportive, I don't like the job (stressful and being asked to do the job of several people, back-stabbers...) and the sector I currently work in. I think this contributed in part to my health issues.

After such a big life-altering event I realised I really need to make changes in my life including finding myself a new job that I don't actually hate...

Some of the barriers though:

  • obviously I will have to mention the fact that I had time off sick to a new employer
  • I am quite senior so my notice would be 3 months which will put off some employers
  • I am middle-aged so I know that will count against me with some employers.

I just wanted to see if anyone who had to deal with this type of scenario had any advice on how to approach things and maybe some stories of people changing career to inspire me.

My background so far has been in projects, services and team management for charities. I also have a decade worth of experience of communications and marketing (websites, social media, graphic design, PR) but I never really enjoyed that apart from the copy-writing aspect, as I am too much of an introvert for comms-related roles.

Any advice much appreciated...

@HNY2023

Sounds good although I don't really have any experience in that type of role...

Hang in there with current employer (where I went wrong)

The sickness equalling time away from the business I’ve always mentioned myself for start of year (I to very much felt this way after surgery, gosh do I want my job etc ) countless times but most employers it is wasted breath they don’t see the mobility problems so it’s like their brains struggle to compute.

Honestly I’ve started in so many companies who just couldn’t give a fig the last five months that better does not exist. (Currently relying on a recruitment agent for 8 days work this month.)
