Which day off?

I work in a school and am planning to reduce my days to 3 or 4per week.
Does it make any difference which days I drop?
There's only one Bank Holiday (MayDay) which is not already in the school holidays, but if I were usually not to work on Mondays, does that then mean I'd get another day off in lieu? Or compensated for not having the benefit of that extra ' free' day? Or do I just suck it up?
It's a state school, HR is local council who could not be more unhelpful in terms of anyone explaining things or answering the phone: my contract currently states 36 hours pw, with an unpaid lunch hour.
My decision doesn't hinge solely on this, but it would be good to know how it works. If anyone can help, I'd be very grateful!

Am I right in presuming you aren't a teacher ?

That said, I presume many school staff's contracts are the same in terms of BHs - your contract is usually for the days the school is open, and no, you don't get credit / lieu hours for BHs.
