Hi all I’m so confused and just need a bit of help. I’m not sure if I’m just being dumb but if there are any payroll or HR people out there, I would really appreciate your help with this one.

I was due to return to work on 19/09/2023 but I resigned on 23/08/2023. I received a letter saying I accrued 131.85 hours of annual leave at the rate of 10.42. I received my final payslip today and it doesn’t seem right to me. It says
Holiday pay: 1373.88
Unpaid Sick: - 505.81

I just don’t understand where the unpaid sick deduction comes from if I’ve been on maternity leave? I stopped receiving Mat pay from work in June after 9 months.

Also I have messaged my payroll but likely won’t get a quick response so just wondering if anyone could possibly help with this.

Do you have to pay back any occupational maternity pay because you haven't returned to work following maternity leave? Could it be to do with that?

BumpVee · 25/09/2023 20:29

@beachdays27 I read the employee handbook so many times before I went off and it didn’t mention anything about occupational maternity pay so I don’t think so. I did have a sick note before I went on maternity leave for about 2 months due to pregnancy related illness so I’m not sure if it’s to do with that? I was on SSP at the time though and again nothing in the employee handbook about repaying that so I’m really unsure.

Are you not working your notice due to sickness, i.e you've been signed off?

BumpVee · 25/09/2023 20:49

@justsayingthat I don’t have a sick note but I was never actually told that I needed to work a notice period. I think that’s because I resigned while I was still on unpaid maternity leave. My manager acknowledged my resignation and didn’t mention anything about it:/

What's your notice period op? It looks like you may have issued notice too late so they have put the bit between your return date and the end of your notice as sick

Having said that, there shouldn't be a deduction unless there is the corresponding payment as well - they don't take money off you for sickness, the deduction would be to take those days to 0.
