Interviewer emailed saying no decision yet

My DH had a job interview yesterday morning 9am. It was a second and final interview

It was very short, only 15 minutes (we took this as a bad sign).

He was told he'd hear same day. Heard nothing all day until 5pm, received an email saying thank you and they will let him know tomorrow.

What could this mean? It's not an immediate no. But it's also means he's not an easy yes.

Maybe they've offered to someone else and he is second choice in case that person says no?

Or do you think they just can't decide between two or more candidates

Could be all kind of things

their first choice may have asked to sleep on their decision overnight.

one of the panel may have had to go home early for a bereavement or personal issue meaning they still need to decide

there may have been a late entry that still fit the criteria and perhaps they have to interview them

its not a bad sign as such or they would have told him yesterday.Sounds like he is appointable but not their first choice for whatever reason - or they still need to discuss?

I think you're overthinking it. Any number of things could have happened which delayed their decision making

Cheeesus · 19/09/2023 10:23

That’s nice of them to let him know is all you can really conclude.

Spirallingdownwards · 19/09/2023 10:27

Probably the people making a joint decision haven't been able to liaise yet.

Exactly what I was going to say.

I would take this as a no. I've worked in HR and attended a lot of interviews on both sides of the desk. If they said they'd let you know the same day and didn't it usually means they offered and are awaiting a confirmation before either informing all candidates or offering to next on the list. 15 minute interviews are also bad news. Sorry OP, just my experience.

Thanks for all your thoughts. Hopefully I am overthinking it but I think the last pp may be right. Still nothing yet at almost 2pm

I would suspect the preferred candidate is still thinking it over or is negotiating some aspect of the package.
It does suggest that your DH was appoint able though and is still a potential candidate.

They offered the job!! At about 6pm. What a long day of waiting 😂

Great news

Cloverforever · 19/09/2023 21:12

Excellent news OP. Just shows, it pays to be optimistic.

SeptemberSuns · 20/09/2023 08:15

Good news and congratulations.

They offered it to someone else and they thinking about it
