Bank holidays

I've just been told a company want to offer me a job. The actual formal offer with details will be sent through very soon.

I need to work a Monday due to childcare and will be part time.

Do all companies take bank holidays from your total allowance? I.e. I'll be left with hardly any holiday. Or do some do it differently? I'd like to be prepared before negotiating as I will have about 2.5/3 weeks holiday otherwise which just isn't enough!

It depends how they allocate bank holidays. The statutory minimum includes them in which case those hours can be deducted from the allowance but some companies add them on to al separately. There are only four fixed on Mondays though, in England at least.

It depends on the company

The legal minimum number of days annual leave for staff can be counted with the bank holidays included, others provide leave plus bank holidays

Entirely depends on how generous they are.

I've worked for companies that require it to be used from your annual leave, and I've worked for some where they gift you the bank holidays and days between Christmas and New Years.

Unless they give public holidays on top of annual leave, and very few places do, then yes... as a part time worker some of your leave entitlement will be taken up by public holidays. You can't expect more leave than anyone else.

It really just means you lose a lot of flexibility as to when you can use your leave entitlement because you will have no choice but to use up so many leave days for the bank holiday Mondays. You will get the same overall amount of time off as someone who works the same hours but doesn't work Mondays, but they end up with more flexibility as to when they can use their leave days as they don't have to take those Mondays off

I'm NHS outpatients and we have to use AL to cover Bank hol. It's a big chunk unless you could mange to use one of your days off on Bank hok rather than AL. That's what I've requested to do going forward as I'm struggling.

Thanks everyone. I guess I will just have to wait and see.

But yes I think I'll have to ask if I can swap days at some point to make up some days as I will struggle without the flexibility.

Thanks!
