Should I apply for other jobs? Need some advice!

I started a new job earlier this year. More hours, better pay. Left old company (been there over a decade) on good terms. The new company has made me feel so welcome and I've enjoyed working for them, mostly.

But over the summer it's slowed right down, my manager has been away so no one to ask for more tasks. I work over 5 days (4 days' hours) and I've felt so guilty about neglecting my children and not being able to take them out etc over the summer (they're young teens, spending too much time on screens).

I'm on a 6 month contract, and manager has said we'll be reviewing when they return from leave. In the meantime, jobs are coming up at old company (different department).

Am I being stupid to apply when I don't know what the future holds here and I've not done a full 6 months yet? Or is it sensible as I've got 2 months to end of contract? Would it be terrible to go back to old company? Would I look like a failure? But what if they realise I don't have enough to do and I end up jobless just before Christmas??

I'm also a massive people pleaser with a fear of failure, so being rejected, handing in my notice or turning down a job offer are things I find really stressful!

(Sorry for length, kind of brain dumping here!)

Wait until the end of the holidays. Don't feel guilty about teens, they would do the same if you were there or not.

It sounds like your problem is that you weren't kept busy. Talk about it with your boss when they are back. Ask for a list of tasks to do when it is quiet.
