Job Offer Dilemma

Context - charity fundraiser with 15+years experience with specialism in one area of fundraising.

Needing some ideas about maintaining a long term career in a single area of fundraising or diversifying into other areas of fundraising.

I'm in the position where I have 2 job offers - one is to stay in my existing organisation and get a promoted role basically making me head of specialism for UK with an ok salary increment over 3-4 years. I'd be staying where I am but moving into a promoted position after a decade doing a similar job. Other option is a head of fundraising for a local charity where I would have responsibility for managing and growing all areas of fundraising with the salary being just a little bit more than I get now.

Question is for career progression and the range of future roles that could be available is it better to have a really strong specialism (which in my case is trusts and foundations) or gain a much broader experience in a leadership role - keen to hear what people think

Go for more money. You can always broaden your experience at the senior level if you have decent managers.

I don't work in but work closely with a development team. I would take the second option which will give you exposure to a new workplace, broader remit and leadership. You've already been in the same org for 10 years and now potentially planning 3-4 years in the same org but a slightly more senior role. That's a long time to be in one place.

Take the jump and move organisations. You will learn so much more somewhere new.
