Quick bit of background: I have been working in tech / IT / IS for the past ten years or so and am now at senior management level, although I don't have what you would call a 'traditional' tech background.
Slightly unusual situation has arisen in my company, where I've been working for a few years: the current CTO, who is my boss, is leaving and I'm thinking of putting myself forward as an internal candidate (there are no other internals, it would have to go external). In terms of responsibility, it would really only be about one step up, but a fairly significant one.
My boss and I get on very well, so I will of course put this in front of them, but I'd like to gather some info in advance.
(I will also be doing the usual DD and benchmarking online etc)
Are you or have you been a CTO? If so, what is your skillset? My worry is that the one element I lack experience in is network engineering / hardware etc (although I have worked extensively in IS, systems management, software dev, 'speak' multiple coding languages etc).
My main USP is that I have very strong people / stakeholder skills (not enormously common in IT) and I think I could play on this to an extent, assuming I can then hire a very strong technical team.
Thoughts?
