Does anyone work as a police/control room call handler?

What's it like? Do you enjoy it?

Would you apply for the job?

I used to. Still in the police but moved to a different role when I changed forces.

It’s full on but after twenty years in the emergency services, this is the best role I had. I LOVED it.

Positives: great team atmosphere, no shift is ever the same, rewarding. Pay is good and often lots of opportunities for overtime.

Negatives: Shift work takes getting used to, some calls / incidents will be distressing and some will stay with you.

Same as pp. I used to but now do a different role in the force.
The shifts were defo the worse part and affect your health massively. Eating at weird times, sleeping at weird times. It's hard to get leave when you want it and the days/ nights are long.
However, the job itself is great and you really do help people in their hour of need which feels rewarding but stressful in equal measures.
