Has anyone haggled for a full-time equivalent salary for part-time hours?

Hey, just that really, has anyone successfully secured a full time equivalent salary for part time hours? I am interviewing on Wednesday for a management role within a social care company who I previously worked for on a zero hours basis as a care support. What the role requires and the salary they are offering do not seem to marry, but I appreciate what they do as an organisation.

I am not entirely clear what you are asking. Are you saying you want the salary offered for the role full-time, but to work fewer hours? I'd think that would be an unlikely ask, but you can ask for anything you like. If you are saying that the hourly rate for a part-time worker in the same role is less than the rate for the full-time worker, that would be unlawful unless they could substantiate a different reason for the lower rate for part-time workers.

Why should they give you a ft salary for a part time role?

hoophoophooray · 22/07/2023 15:36

I mean you can ask.... not sure they would agree as that is effectively a payrise and then everyone would want one

Do you mean a ft job there pays 40k and a 2.5 day a week job only pays 15k and you want to haggle for 20k?

I think it’s illegal to discriminate against part time workers so they shouldn’t be paid less pro rata for the same job

What do you actually mean? I don't understand your op.

I was paid the same salary when I dropped a day. But my pay is based on meeting certain targets and it just meant I had 20% less time available each week to meet those targets.

It did not work. All that happened is that I had to work full time with less time to do it (and i had already had to work overtime to meet the impossible targets anyway).

I would be very annoyed if someone got paid the same as me for half the work.

So are you saying you've applied for a full time post with a salary of say £30k. If you get offered it you want to ask if you can work 3 days a week and still get paid £30k? So that's actually 2 requests there, part time and salary.

I've interviewed for a role in the past and then asked if I could have part time hours and was successful. I know several people who've managed to do this. But that was being paid pro-rata for the hours I worked eg work 3/5 therefore paid 3/5 of full time salary.

As PP has said you can ask for anything you want but it doesn't mean they have to offer it.
