How soon is too soon regarding promotion?

Hi everyone. Would like to hear people’s thoughts on this-Last September I started a new job after over a decade in my last job. Similarish type of sector but also very different role and has taken me a long time to get used to the new systems etc. Going from somewhere where you know everything to knowing nothing is daunting and it really has taken me these last 10 months to get my head around it all.
Luckily everyone has been great and patient with me explaining things and I’ve had some lovely feedback so all seems good.
Last week the person above me decided to leave and so her role will be advertised in the next week or so……
My dilemma is, is it too soon to go for a promotion if it hasn’t even been a year? I’m really not sure, I think with support I could do it, I have managed before but I’m so scared of applying, interviewing and getting told no. How could I face my boss afterwards?
Has anyone got any experience of doing similar and has any advice-I’d be so grateful!

I would apply. If you don’t get it, you shouldn’t feel embarrassed because it’s been less than a year - but you might learn something by applying that would help for next time

I would apply too. This happened to me but from the other side. I was the person recruiting and the "new" member of staff applied. I was really pleased, they were the best person for the job! Even if they hadn't got it I would have known where their ambitions were and could help them develop skills for getting there. Go for it and good luck!
