Any TA's in a union?
If so, which one?

Not many are at my school, so just asking for info.

Thanks.

All the TAs at my school are in the same union - Unison.

It's a shame it's more of a enteral union, rather than education specific tbh though.

Qilin · 12/07/2023 19:45

enteral - general

Saucery · 12/07/2023 19:46

There’s Unison, but if you just want the legal support there is Edapt, who are non-political.

Fruttidelbosco · 12/07/2023 19:48

If you are in the independent sector, you can be with the NEU.

MumofSpud · 12/07/2023 19:49

When I was support staff I was in Unison

Runaround50 · 12/07/2023 19:50

Thanks all.
Just researching now.

Support staff can join the NEU

Hummusanddipdip · 12/07/2023 20:07

I'm with NEU we're a mix of Unison, NEU and GMB at the school I'm at.

WheresMyChunkz · 12/07/2023 20:09

You can join anu union you want and they can represent you / assist during grievance proceedings etc but might not be able to negotiate pay rises or other changes to terms and conditions. I am a TA with GMB and in my last school they represented a large group of us in a collective grievance and pay discussions.

Find a union you like the look of then tell them where you work and what as (NEU represent teachers not TAs in discussions around collective changes to terms and conditions for example) and ask them clear questions like Can you make representations to my employer regarding payrises, What assistance can you offer if I raise a grievance or face disciplinary action etc.

You can be in state schools too. I am.

Soccermumamir · 12/07/2023 20:15

I'm in Unison. Been in it for years.

jmh740 · 12/07/2023 20:21

TheMadGardener · 12/07/2023 20:22

Most of the support staff at our school are in Unison.

@Saucery Thanks for this. I've never heard of Edapt. I'm currently with Unison but would be much happier with a non-political option.

42isthemeaning · 12/07/2023 20:36

Our TAs are in NEU and we represent them in our JNC meetings with leadership.

Runaround50 · 13/07/2023 16:46

Thanks again for all your suggestions.

I think I just want out now. So tired and the pay is appalling. Time to move on.

Is there a rep at your school? That's who I'd go with. I'm with the NEU.
