Changing mind after accepting job offer

Hello,

Can anyone help? I accepted a conditional job offer with the local authority and I am just at referencing / DBS stage. It's been very very slow and has taken 10 weeks from verbal job offer to this. They asked for my DBS info today so I have a long way to go before getting a start date.

My issue is that in that time - I've become seriously unwell and have been in & out of hospital quite a lot.

I had forgotten about the new role until they (automated email) emailed to request DBS details.

I think it would be best for me and my family if I focused on recovering first and foremost but I'm worried about what the Local Authority will say / do. I don't think I'm in any contract as my offer is "conditional" and they tell people not to hand in notices yet as it takes so long and they're so thorough with details.

Any advice? I'm worried about everything! I hate letting people down, but my focus needs to be on myself.

I am sure you have nothing to worry about. These things happen sometimes.

Do you have a sense of how long you're going to need/want to recover? You might want to ask about delaying the (yet to be) proposed start date given your health.
