Does a process need to be followed by company ie does the employee need to be informed there will be a meeting?

It's good practice, mainly to protect the employer. Although it's mostly not possible to claim unfair dismissal until two years, it isn't impossible either. They ought to want to show they did the right process and didn't dismiss on the few protected grounds. But legally there is nothing that says they must have a meeting with you, no.
