Apply elsewhere or hang tight?

Wanted to get opinions on what others would do in my position.

Been in current temp role just over two years but funding due to come to an end soon. Since starting, the role has changed dramatically so my manager had agreed to a salary uplift. The intention is to put forward a proposal to extend the position and regrade to a higher salary but post still won't be permanent. While it's likely the post will be extended, the salary increase isn't a done deal.

I've now seen a new permanent role advertised elsewhere which offers the same salary that is being proposed (but not yet agreed) for current role. It's very similar to my current post with great potential but that's true of where I am now.

What would you do? Might seem silly to ask but applications and interviews take so much time these days and no one in real life is being helpful!

You need to protect your own interests and apply elsewhere.

I know it's an absolute ballache applying for jobs, but thems the breaks.

Current job uplift hasnt been approved, so you cant rely on it coming good, or they may still need you to apply and interview anyway.

Thanks @Timeforabiscuit. I don't think I was clear that the current uplift has been approved and backdated, it's the regrade that's still up in the air.

I think I will still apply for the other role though. I had a call with the recruiting manager and it sounds great. Maybe less home working but I can swallow that for a 20% pay increase!

I'd want security, its been 2 years and I feel that if your now job wanted you there permanently they have done something about it by now

Jobotheclown · 22/06/2023 18:47

I agree @MollysBrolly. Application submitted today!

If you've been working for them for 2 years you may have acquired some employment rights despite it officially being a temp role - worth checking. Are you in a union? ACAS may be able to help, or gov.uk, or the Legal section here.

Jobotheclown · 22/06/2023 18:57

Thanks @Whataretheodds. I'm not worried about anything that I'd need to get the union involved with but wondering whether to wait around and see if this regrading materialises and if I should let other opportunities pass me by in the meantime.

I've applied for the other job today so will wait and see if I get shortlisted and take it from there.
