My son has just finished year 11 and would like to be a perfumer as a career. He's picked A levels including Art and Chemistry. He has read you need a chemistry degree to be a perfumer.
Does anyone have any experience in this field? When he finishes A levels, I'm wondering what his options could be.

Does he have a good nose? Is he obsessed with scents?

Weirdly enough, I was talking about this to somebody I met at a party the other day.

They studied chemistry as a UG, then went to work for Unilever.

Chemistry does seem to be the standard 'in' for the big cosmetic houses / perfumeries.

Yes, he sniffs everything and has been training his nose. He has a lot of the chemicals used in perfumes and is training himself to recognise each one plus essential oils.

Thank you. He seems to have picked the right A levels then. He is going for Art for the design/creative aspect and also Biology as his back up is plant science/Botany.

Probably start learning French on the side and look up some of the perfume factories in Grasse to get some experience.
