Voluntary Redundancy - WWYD

Hi,
I work for a national company who decided earlier this year that most of their employees, including me, will have to reapply for their own jobs. In most cases that's because they are losing posts although that isn't true in my case. They are doing this region by region with mine going last. I've been doing my job for eighteen years and would really like to keep it. The last time they did something like this people were allowed to take redundancy and it cost them a fortune so this time they're keeping them to an absolute minimum. Instead they are trying to force unsuccessful applicants to work in totally different areas of the business (training will be given). I think I have a reasonably good chance of keeping my job although I am worried that my age (late fifties) will count against me. My plan was to apply and if unsuccessful try for voluntary redundancy as I have zero interest in the new jobs. However, as they are over half way through the process nationally, they've abruptly announced they are going to shut the VR window very shortly. WWYD? I suspect I have minimal chance of VR but I would like to apply if I can't keep my job. Equally I'm worried that if I apply for VR it would weaken my chances of holding on to my job when it finally comes up in a couple of months (and I probably won't get it anyway).

Apply. 100%

It shouldn't weaken your chance of getting a new job within the company, but if you're successful in VR that's a healthy payout to cushion you whilst you look for work.
