Police Vetting - Anyone help?!

Hello,
I have a conditional offer as a service advisor for Police Scotland. I am really worried about the vetting stage, which I completed the form on Monday. I used to have a lot of debt probably £5k plus (on a lowish income)… I’ve taken it down to just under £2k or thereabouts. I do have a default from an old overdraft that is over £1k but I’ve said this is my only debt not being actioned and I’m in the middle of setting up a payment plan, which I did the other day. Was in a debt management plan for about a month in early 2018, didn’t realize what it did to your credit score and shortly cancelled it and paid off (almost) all the debt myself. I have two credit cards with quite a low limit.
Apart from that my finances are alright and I live comfortably, don’t have any rent commitments etc as live at home. Do have a fixed penalty notice from when I was 17 (I’m 27 now) just for general drunken foolishness. I am a different person now, had a PVG many times as was working in teaching, I’ve just left university. Do you think my vetting will be alright? I quite want the job! Will be gutted if stupid financial decisions when I was young have screwed it.

My finances were fucked after mat leave and divorce and got BPSS, DBS enhanced and some kind of DIO clearance. I also have MOD of some kind.

They're not worried about a bit of debt, they want to know you're not washing money.

Thanks, I hope not! Prob just overly worrying, I’m sure there’s plenty of people who made stupid financial decisions in their late teens and early twenties. Hopefully all is well and it’s doesn’t take forever also!

no, they are looking for people who may be in a financial hole and open to bribery or corruption. O/p will have access to secure databases and information so they are looking to exclude anyone who may be exploitable.

o/p, iirc I think the trigger for “debt” where they look more closely is any loans over more than 5 years (excluding mortgage).

if you are financially stable and getting out of debt rather than into it, and managing well, it’ll be fine.

also- anyone dodgy on your social media remove them.

Yeah I’ve got that one debt from probably 2016 that I defaulted on and then tbh I forgot about it for a good bit, so it’s an old debt but I’ve phoned them to start repaying which I’ve told them. Also anybody on your social media even if it’s locked?! Maybe do have one or two people who I should prob remove just on the safe side 🤣🤣

Also think it’s worth noting literally a few months in this job and these debts would be cleared like that as it’s like x3/4 my current contracted salary 🤣 Wish I could be like I’ll pay it off in two months if you pass me, check! Haha

Hi,

can anyone help me.

I’ve recently been refused police vetting due to 2 ccjs and they said there was something else that couldn’t be disclosed to me.

I’ve tried to appeal, just waiting to hear back. Would it help if I contacted the courts and tried to make payments?? If I got an IVA would that jeopardise my chances even more?

Pccleaner · 24/10/2023 19:57

I thought worries over bribery too. I’ve heard even bank clerks get approached by criminals so imagine thre would be a lot of potential for this. Of course, logically, all sorts of people are tempted regardless of income.

Thanks for your reply. I’m really gutted. After all the assessments and tests for nothing 😆
