Notice Period and holiday

So I'm in a bit of a panic. I am moving jobs and have 3 month notice period, which means I have to start the new job beginning of September. However, I have booked holiday for 3 weeks in September that I can't really cancel bookings flights etc. I realise that extends the start day to 4 months in the future. :(

What do I do? Cancel plans or ask for a later start date?

Thanks!

Ask for later start date if you can.

I was offered a 24k job with a mobility company but had to turn it down and burnt bridges for a family holiday which then got reduced by 2 days (dad had heart scans) and we had to get up extra early on last day so Dad could get me to hospital on time for my scan which I was only grateful didn’t ruin a work day but I’d never have known this in advance.

if I had my time again, I’d ask if later start date was certainly possible.

Either they accept a later start date or they honor the holiday!

I wouldn’t panic about it - they are human too.

We once had someone come in for a few days of induction then head off to New Zealand. I’m not sure how the pay worked and what his official start date was, but talk to them.

Most jobs honour existing holidays. Speak to your new employer and ask them if they want you to start in September or when you get back from holiday. Honestly, it's completely normal and nothing to worry about.

Talk to the new company.
Then either start in Sept, and go on holiday, or start in October - and don't hand your notice in at work for another month.

I have a very similar issue. I've been verbally offered a job as police staff and need to do a 6w induction period then start a regular 10 day shift pattern. I don't have a formal offer or a start date as I am currently going through police vetting - I submitted everything 10 days ago, it could take another week or months - totally unspecified and presumably related to my background, which I don't think is at all murky but I just can't relax until I have got through this stage. I have a 2.5w holiday booked for the start of September so I am desperate to hand in my notice at my current job (1m) and complete the 6w induction before the start of September but it's getting tight! Apparently the vetting is being expedited and but I've just got no idea and can't ask anyone.

I feel your pain. In your shoes I think I'd just tell them and ask if they'd prefer you start then have 3w leave or negotiate your start date for the beginning of October (then you won't have used most of your leave before you've accrued it!).

Best of love and luck!
