Changing start date

I've accepted a new job (civil service) and was asked when I wanted to start. I suggested mid August and have signed a contract. They are in the process of checking refs and doing security etc.

I've now realised that it would be a lot more convenient to start early September. Do you think it's ok for me to request this? I'm really pleased to have the offer and don't want to do anything to jeopardise it. I'm dealing with HR not my future manager if that makes any difference.

I don't mind asking and being told no. Just have a slightly paranoid fear that asking is some sort of huge no-no. Can you reassure me?

I asked to delay 1 week after I'd signed my contract (to use up annual leave at my old job). Was fine! I told them why I was asking
