Do I apply or not?

I'm in a quandary. A job at my firm has come up. It's one I'm qualified for and more of a sideways jump but it'll give me some new skills. The job I'm in at present is a good job and I like it. It's easy for me.

Reasons for moving.
My boss doesn't defend the dept as I feel he could, due to office politics.
I could absolutely be imagining it ( I'm very intuitive) that he's dropping hints to me to move on due to the whole company having financial trouble.
I know the people in the other dept.
If there is a financial clear out, the new position has been budgeted for.

Reasons for staying.
I have it very cushy where I am.
Pay is about the same.
Only have a couple of years until I can retire if I want to.
I can do the work standing on my head.

I honestly don't know what to do. Can anyone give me some ideas I might not have considered?

Humm, tough choice!. If the firm may be in financial trouble and made redundancies do you know what you would get....or, if very little could you survive the next couple of years to retirement?.
I think I would be tempted to apply for the new role, it would keep work interesting to get through those final couple of years!

Thanks. I'm really torn.

It's terrible to be bored & your job is increasingly boring now. Someone told me once "Always apply. You always apply. Decide if you want it later!"
