3 days a week - which ones?

I've been offered a job which is part time - 3 days a week.
They would like one of those days to be Monday ideally.

Which 3 days would you chose?

Keep it simple and do Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday, or split it up a bit? Eg Monday, Tuesday, Thursday (to only have to do 2 days in a row, before another day off)

There is some flexibility (on both sides) to swap a day round here and there if needed with reasonable notice.

When I've worked p/t before it was shorter days, but Monday - Friday. Is there anything I need to consider when deciding which days to work now?

Monday isn't the best day to work as you will have to allocate a lot of your holiday entitlement to cover the bank holidays. Apart from that it's up to you what you feel will work best

As PP said, Monday is the best day off as you should get the bank holiday hours pro rata as annual leave. I’d do Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday

Agree about bank holidays etc. Also, if you have children, you’ll pay for childcare even on bank holidays, so worst of both worlds.

I’d choose Tuesday Wednesday Thursday, to have a nice long weekend. If they’re flexible, you
can do Mondays every now and again

APurpleSquirrel · 04/05/2023 13:34

I do Mon, Wed & Fri - means if I'm having a crap day at work I have the next day off; & vice versa.
Re Bank holidays, I get them pro-rata'd so although I have them all off I don't get paid for them all.
I've been doing this since I went back to work after having DD 8 yrs ago & works well for me.

I would try to get Monday off if possible. If that is the day they really want you I would work Monday - Wednesday, then I have options for long weekends / minitrips away.

Taptap2 · 04/05/2023 15:23

Having a Tuesday off means each bank holiday Monday you have a four day weekend. I’m having a nice May! I do Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.

When I used to work 3 days I preferred to split my working days rather than do three days in a row. It meant I was only away from work for one business day, which stopped my inbox getting out of control, and also I could spread out my exercising on my days off (eg going for a run on Tues and Fri rather than Thurs and Fri).

I do Monday, Wednesday and Friday. At Easter you get a lovely long break 😁.
It works for me, because you’re only out of the office for one day, so work doesn’t pile up in your absence and also I can do household tasks on my days off, so nothing gets too messy at home either.
I sometimes swap days around, either to accommodate a meeting at work, or because I want a long weekend, it works both ways to be flexible.

Thank you all. They would prefer me to work Monday as one of my days, and it makes sense as there are lots of things which start on Mondays in the project cycle.

If I were to agree to Mon - Wed, would it be a reasonable request to say that if it is a BH Monday, I have the option to work Tuesday - Thur instead, so saving some annual leave days for when I want to take them? (I may want the BH off, for example)

In my work place that request would be fine as I’m the only part timer and nobody really minds what I do as long as I do the right number of days. However in previous jobs it would have caused a right stir as there were so many part time staff. So if everyone swapped days about it would have caused problems.

It’s a reasonable request though imo.

Whitewolf2 · 04/05/2023 16:09

I do Mon-Weds, I like having the latter part of the week to do chores and meet up with other people, quite a lot of people seem to be free on a Friday.
I do an office job and don’t tend to miss much at the end of the week, people often have meetings in the first half of the week so it’s not usually too stressful coming back in.
Having kids at school means I would need to take bank holidays off anyway!

LlynTegid · 05/05/2023 15:35

I would say Wednesday to Friday myself.

BeerBot · 05/05/2023 16:28

I've worked 3 days for years. I'd say Mon, Wed, Thurs works well if they need you in Mondays.
I originally did Mon, Tues, Wed but I found it too big a break then and felt every Monday was like coming back from holiday! Having Friday off still gives you long weekend.

And yes I would say that's reasonable request to ask to swap days on bank hol week

mdh2020 · 05/05/2023 17:13

I was teaching part time - Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Mondays so I got the Bank Holidays off, Tuesday wasn’t bad cos I was off on Wednesday and Thursday was great cos I then had a long weekend.

DixonD · 06/05/2023 00:31

I do Tues/Wed/Thurs simply for the bank holiday days being added to annual leave. I get 22.5 days holiday and I only work 14 hours a week.

You would still get your bank holidays off if you worked Mondays, the point is you’d have to spend an awful lot of your leave on them.

Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.
