Moving from public to private sector?

I've worked in various bits of the public sector for 20 years. I now have an offer for an equivalent role in the private sector. The company seem great, the pay and work would be better, but the pension and job stability are worse.

DH and my work mentor think it would be the making of me and that I could always return. My family think I'm stupid to consider it. What do you think?

The last sentence says it all. Go for it! If you don’t try you’ll always regret it.

Go for it. If you enjoy it and thrive, it's worth the pension cut. Stability is overrated. Think of every job as a 2 year stint after which you must move anyways. It will keep you from getting too comfy and on the lookout for great options every few years.

Go for it, I went from public to private and its been the best thing I've done. Instead of just coasting along as you get the payrise regardless of whether you are good or not, I have to show that I'm worth my bonus so it's brought a whole new side in me, one that is ambitious and excited to work. I have places to grow and objectives to achieve. The whole attitude is different too, I speak to people at my old work and they're so down and complain about all sorts of things.

My family had the same doubts about stability and pension but my happiness outweighs that.

@Notanothernewname I'm hoping for the same TBH, I don't do well coasting, although it's very relaxing.
