Hi, does anyone work as a disability assessor for IAS? I’m trying to find out more about the role and wether it is a good place to work but I don’t know anyone that does it.

Thanks in advance 😊

You've got to have a medical background to decide if someone is disabled or not - doctor, nurse etc - which I personally don't agree with as a disabled person who is actually living through it and also because the definition is legal not medical. If you meet the medical qualifications, go ahead, but prepare to be hated.

I can't answer your question, but I just wanted to say that I am also someone with disabilities and I don't hate those who assess people. I hate the number of "benefit bashing" threads on this site about all the people falsely claiming disability benefits etc., etc. But at the same time, for lots of very good reasons there has to be some form of assessment procedure, there have to be thresholds in place, and there also needs to be people who try to identify those taking the piss. I would imagine that you need something of a thick skin at times, but equally if you do your job fairly, don't make assumptions, act in good faith etc., then that is what is needed.

I understand that people may have strong opinions about the job. That’s fine. I just wanted to ask someone who’s done the job how they’ve found it in terms of working hours etc.
