I am currently looking for work and found a job I liked the look of with local government (not UK).

In the advert it said to contact X for an informal chat before applying if you wanted do. I duly did this, met with X and talked the through the role.

I then went home, applied for the job and received a standard email to say that my application had been received and that I would be contacted shortly after the closing date, 17th April, to be told whether or not I would be invited for an interview. To date, I have not heard anything. I know from having applied for jobs in the past that you are informed if you have not met the criteria for an interview.

It is less than 2 weeks since the closing date, I don’t want to seem pushy but also don’t want to come across as miffed that I’ve not heard anything yet. I have checked my Junk inbox too so I know that unless my email is playing sully buggers, I haven’t received anything.

How can I word the email to say that the above without cutting off my nose to spite my face, as it were?

Is it X that you want to email?

Assuming so I would say

Dear X

[I hope this email finds you well ] - some people hate this?

I’d like to thank you for the time you made to speak with me on xxx date about xxx role.

Say what you particularly enjoyed about or learnt from the convo.

restate why chat convinced you this is the role for you.

After our discussion I submitted my application on xxx date.

I have yet to hear back as yet but I look forward to finding out the outcome of my application in due course.

best regards
OP

others will be along to roast me or correct me in due course I am sure.

People will definitely criticise the above, just because this is MN

But if I were you, I'd just send something similar now. It's polite and gets to the point. I'm quite blunt via email, so would probably ask outright when I can expect to hear.

There is no right an wrong way, and (if you are anything like me), you are feeling slightly awkward about asking and that is presenting as procrastinating over the wording.

Oh and some people will express horror that you would even consider chasing them. But they invited more informal contact in job application, so it's fine

  • I have yet to hear back (remove “as yet” - sorry
AlienSupaStar · 26/04/2023 08:45

@Unbridezilla agree!!

😅

catinthesunshine · 26/04/2023 08:57

I would wait another week at least - that’s not a long time for shortlisting

SinisterIslandRoundabout · 26/04/2023 09:28

Yes, it is X that I want to email as I have some email correspondence with them and would like to think that we got on ok during the chat.

@AlienSupaStar thank you for your wording and I can put something together using bits of your suggestion.

@Unbridezilla and @catinthesunshine I will compromise between your suggestions and email tomorrow. That way I should know one way or the other by the weekend and stop worrying about it.

Good luck @SinisterIslandRoundabout

SinisterIslandRoundabout · 29/04/2023 06:49

@AlienSupaStar thank you. Still haven’t done it as job-wise it went a bit nuts this week but will send something on Tuesday pm if nothing comes in in the morning.

So after procrastinating and ‘giving them another day’ I decided that I was definitely going to email this afternoon. However, an invitation for an interview dropped into my inbox around 10.30 this morning.

Very happy, just need to nail the interview now!

Thank you all for your suggestions.

@drinkeatsmile after a terrible interview on Monday, I was asked to go for an informal chat on Wednesday and I have now been offered the job today. So relieved as I really wanted the position.

Yay!

Brilliant news @SinisterIslandRoundabout . Congratulations.

SinisterIslandRoundabout · 18/05/2023 13:06

@Tromso and @AnxiousShep thank you! I knew I’d blown the interview so was so relieved when X rang asking me to meet for another informal chat.

I can only assume she saw how different I was in the interview compared to how I was when I first met her so decided to give me a second chance. I feel very lucky! Or they were desperate to fill the post 😆😆😆
